Sinclair Host of Summer 2005 Teacher Training for Project Lead the Way
In July and August, of 2005, Sinclair Community College was home to two intensive two-week training sessions for over 50 teachers from all over Ohio and four other states. The teachers involved were overwhelmed not just by the amount of work, which was immense, but also by the quality of the instruction and the attention to detail in the classes.
The four courses taught, Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing, prepared the teachers to teach those PLTW courses in their respective high schools or middle schools. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is a national alliance for pre-engineering programs, and Sinclair is one of only two community colleges chosen as PLTW state affiliate institutions. Other PLTW affiliates include Purdue, Duke, and Arizona State universities. Project Lead the Way, with over 120,000 students participating nationwide, now has 47 programs up and running in Ohio. PLTW is headquartered on the Sinclair campus, in downtown Dayton, with Monica Pfarr as its Ohio affiliate director.
The two-week summer sessions were taught by designated “master teachers” approved and appointed by PLTW. Once approved as a master teacher of the PLTW curriculum, designees can travel to other states and teach the courses for which they are approved. Sinclair faculty members Soroush Gharamani and Rob Chambers, trained as affiliate professors, this year helped to teach the Intro to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering classes for which they were trained last year. Steve Wendel, who will be an affiliate professor next year, received training this summer in Gateway to Technology, PLTW’s middle school program, and Engineering Design and Development, the capstone course.
In 2006, Sinclair will offer Gateway to Technology, Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Engineering Design and Development in addition to the four courses listed above.
