Summer Training Institute once again a triumph for PLTW Ohio
2006 was the biggest year ever for PLTW’s Summer Institute teacher training. 97 teachers from ten states were trained in seven classes. That total is nearly double the total of 50 teachers trained last year, and far exceeds this year’s projection of 75. Nine states besides Ohio were represented—Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, Kentucky, and West Virginia. West Virginia, brand new to the PLTW network, sent their first ever teacher to PLTW training in both IED and POE. A total of 66 Ohio teachers were trained.
Comments from the teachers who took the training were overwhelmingly positive, but also contained cautionary advice for next year’s participants such as the following:
“Be prepared to focus on nothing but your STI course.”
“Keep an open mind.”
“Be prepared to hit the ground running and not stop.”
“Get plenty of sleep ahead of time!”
“Try a few tutorials before coming.”
“Review your basic math skills.”
“Be sure your laptop is powerful enough and that you have done the updates.”
STI participant Ed Goodwin, from River Valley High School in Caledonia, Ohio, had this to say about his STI experience:
“As a Tech Ed teacher, (I appreciated) the re-introduction into some long-forgotten math concepts. . .it was also great to be able to use the actual lab equipment at the training and complete some of the lesson requirements before school starts. That will be VERY helpful.”
“Even though I have not taught the class, I feel somewhat experienced with the lab equipment and this will reduce my prep time a lot at school. The friendliness of the other class members was appreciated, too, as all were willing to help others. . . Considering that we compressed a whole year class into two weeks is remarkable.”
We hope to have similar comments (and some even better) after next year’s STI. We look forward to that time and hope we can accommodate an even larger number of teachers to help continue the growth of our PLTW network in Ohio.
