Another clean sweep for PLTW students in Battlebots IQ competition

Blue Steel, BotBot, Thunder Down Under, and Ultimate Punishment—if the names sound menacing, they’re nothing compared to the winning remote controlled fighting robots who bear their names.  Teams of PLTW students from Centerville, Colonel White, Dunbar, and Patterson were the big winners of the day, sweeping all categories in the Battlebots IQ competition, held in October at the Dayton Airport Exposition Center. 

They were joined by others including PLTW schools Greene County Career Center, Kettering Fairmont, and Ridgeville Christian—39 teams from 13 schools in all—to compete in the first-ever Miami Valley Battlebots IQ competition.  The all day double-elimination competition, sponsored by local business and industry, and organized and run by the Dayton Tooling and Machining Association, paired students with companies who helped supply materials and mentoring for the competition. 

“Battlebots IQ is an exciting way to involve kids in manufacturing and engineering” said Jerry Kronenberger, president of Dayton Supply and Tool and a member of the DTMA Battlebots IQ Steering Committee.   “It encourages creativity and introduces them to skills so critical to our field.” 

But Ridgeville Christian student Todd Merritt summed up the competition even more succinctly—“This is HARD,” Todd said.  “But it’s the GOOD kind of hard. . .”
