2005 Statewide Meeting & Professional Development Day
September 22 and 23, 2005
The Fawcett Center, Ohio State University
Columbus, Ohio
The 2005 Statewide Meeting and Professional Development day attracted more than 175 educators from across the state who have either already implemented PLTW or are intending to do so. The Ohio State University partnered with Sinclair Community College to offer presenters with information about current and future technologies and workforce needs. Among the presenters were Dick Blais, Executive Director of Project Lead the Way, Dave Powell, Environmental Director, American Electric Power, Dave Dickinson, Ohio State welding professor, and "Anthony" Ananthanarayana, of Delphi Energy and Chassis.
Governor Bob Taft, scheduled to appear and accept an award from Dick Blais for his support in helping develop PLTW in Ohio, was unable to attend. Susan Bodary, the governor's executive assistant for education and workforce, accepted the award on the governor's behalf. Ms. Bodary also assisted Mr. Blais in bestowing Project Lead the Way national certification status on Akron Garfield High School and on Miller City High School. Students from those schools will now be eligible to receive college credit for their PLTW classes at a number of colleges and universities including Purdue, San Diego State, Ohio State, Penn State, Duke, and many others.
Five student teams from Ridgeville Christian School, Polaris Career Center, Medina Career Center, Akron Garfield, and Miller City set up displays of the work they have completed in their PLTW classes and fielded questions from the educators about their classes and their future plans. Many of the new Project Lead the Way programs expressed interest in having more than just a lunch period to spend with the student displays, since they are so interesting and the students are so engaged in the work. Next year's schedule will hopefully reflect the interest shown and provide more contact with students.

During lunch, Ohio educators at PLTWO Statewide Meeting catch up on PLTW news |
Another major highlight of this year's meeting was a tour of the Ohio State University's welding laboratories. Nearly all of the educators who took the tour walked away with an entirely revamped perception of welding in today's manufacturing marketplace.
On Day Two of the conference, teachers and counselors attended separate sessions to aid them in implementing PLTW at their schools. The counselors were treated to a presentation from veteran PLTW counselor Susan Tresco from Cazenovia, New York, along with presentations on marketing PLTW on both the national level (Regional Director Bob Dorn) and the local level (PLTW teacher Peter Leeper). Teachers heard presentations on transitioning from a traditional tech prep curriculum to PLTW, utilizing resources, and data collection, and formed roundtables covering each of the first three PLTW course offerings, IED, POE, and DE. .
Next year's meeting will definitely involve another new technology to explore. We look forward to a productive PLTW year and another successful Statewide Meeting in 2006.
